Brushing braces teeth

Author: 6neat

Braces are very common sights. The usage of braces has always been high and even today, it remains at the same position.
Using braces can attract plaque and even food particles. These particles stain the teeth of a person if they are not brushed properly. Most orthodontists would recommend brushing after single snack or meal by using fluoride toothpaste. This removes the food particles in a very careful manner. Sometimes, a fluoride mouthwash is also prescribed by orthodontists. This is because
mouthwash gets to places that are hard to reach for any toothpaste.
Flossing is one of the methods that most people who use braces try. This is because flossing always is one of the best methods to get rid of food particles. Before flossing, one has to feed the shorter end of the floss in between the space that is present between the upper portion of the tooth and the main arch wire that is closet to the gum. Using a gentle sawing motion, the upper floss can be worked on each side of the tooth. Applying a lot of force is not advisable as it can hurt the teeth or braces or even both.
Brushing your teeth with soft toothbrush should be initiated and brushing down from top and up from bottom should be done. There are brushes designed specially for cleaning the braces. This type of brush helps in brushing by making several strokes in all the directions and also in moving between braces.
Brushing braces teeth is possible with the right type of brushes and patience.
However, certain foods should be avoided so that your braces do not loosen or break. Some foods that are hard to bite, hard nuts, popcorn, carrots and also chewy food namely caramels should be strictly avoided. Apart from this, even chewing bubble gum should be totally avoided.
Similarly, while brushing your teeth, the retainer should also be brushed well. You should disinfect your retainer once a week at least by soaking it in any denture cleanser namely Efferdent or other similar brand names. This is done by adding cleanser to a cup of warm water and rinsing. However, prior to placing it in the mouth, you should rinse it thoroughly with plain water.
Wearing braces and playing sports should be done with utmost care. You should wear a mouth guard to prevent any harm to your mouth. You have to contact the doctor if the brackets get loosen. As braces brush the mouth surface, there are more chances of developing canker sores. This can be cured with some pain reliever solution and the irritation can be healed easily.
