Author: 6neat

Glasses are a simple, effective and practical tool which help in improved sight. Over the centuries glasses have changed form and function. Beginning with monocles, eyeglasses and pince-nez's to the modern design of, glasses have come a long way. In the 18th-19th centuries it wasn't accepted to wear glasses for reading purposes in public. Also you had to be rich to afford glasses since they were extremely expensive, and thus glasses were a sign of affluence and status. Because of this, glasses were used as fashion accessories and worn around ribbons or on gold handles that could be used to hold the glasses to the eyes. They were generally in the form of eyeglasses, monocles or pince-nez's.
By the 20th century glasses were accepted by society and were cost-friendly. Thus they were now available to the common man too who needed them to improve vision.
Children, adults, men and women were all wearing glasses to help them. In the 1950's and 1960's glasses suddenly became extremely popular. One reason for this was that Hollywood was experimenting with the new look - glasses. One way of making anything famous is to see famous people and celebrities use it. The same went for glasses. Celebrities wearing glasses was the new in thing. The most famous icon from that time is Audrey Hepburn in her big dark sunglasses.
There are a lot of celebrities, past and present who wear glasses, prescription and as a fashion accessory.
The most famous celebrity who has made his need for glasses into a fashion statement and a trademark is Elton John, who own thousands of pairs of glasses probably ranging from the simple to the flashy.
Another celebrity who made glasses popular was Tom Cruise who made the aviator glasses popular in Top Gun.
A lot of celebrities need to wear prescription glasses even if they don't announce it to the world. Johnny Depp is one such celebrity who sports his glasses even on the red carpet at times. Other celebrities wearing glasses to help them read are Anastacia, Jennifer Aniston, Sophia Loren, Demi Moore, Ronan Keating, Austin Powers, Tony Blair, Chris Evans, Elvis Presley, Kylie etc.
Of course almost all celebrities wear sunglasses when they step out in the public eye. They are constantly setting fashions for sunglasses, ranging from huge frames to aviators. Like Fred Allen said, "A celebrity is a person who works hard all his life to become well known, then wears dark glasses to avoid being recognized."
Thus, whatever the reason for wearing glasses may have been, celebrities wearing glasses act as role models for children and even young adults who are hesitant to wear glasses for fear of ridicule.
