People wearing glasses
Author: 6neat
People have been using glasses since the 12th-13th centuries. At that time the technology to wear them hadn't been developed and so they would place the glass on the paper or object they needed magnified. By the 18th-19th centuries glasses that could be worn were developed, but there weren't many takers. Instead of wearing them on their faces, which was not considered fashionable, glasses were worn on ribbons or small handles that could be tucked in.
By the 20th century however, people wearing glasses had become the fashion and more and more people wearing glasses could be seen.
People wearing glasses primarily did so as a corrective measure for improving eyesight. Slowly, and thanks to Hollywood, wearing glasses became the latest fashion, and suddenly people wearing glasses in all sizes and colours could be found everywhere!
Today, glasses have been unconditionally accepted by all and sundry as the easiest way to correct weak eyesight. This could either be near sightedness or far sightedness. For both conditions, and for astigmatism, glasses are the best treatment.
Initially people did face some ridicule because glasses were heavy and cumbersome, being made of glass which need thick sturdy frames. However now, people wearing glasses are as fashion conscious as health conscious. Thus glasses now are as attractive as functional. People wearing glasses spend considerable time and effort (and sometimes money) in picking out the right frames for the glasses, and one that will accentuate their look.
People wearing glasses generally tend to look more intellectual and serious, and in fact, very often some may get glasses without any power to achieve that serious look. People wearing glasses report being taken more seriously than others, probably in conjecture with the idea that those wearing glasses are 'geeks'. Of course, many believe that some people wearing glasses look more attractive and cute. This is the reason why many keep several pairs of glasses for different occasions.
Of course, people wearing glasses also talk of the drawbacks of wearing glasses. These include a slight restriction when it comes to sports and running around since the glasses tend to fall off. There is also a difficulty with peripheral vision. People wearing glasses also have to take extremely good care of their glasses to ensure they remain clean and scratch free, and of course not break.
Sometimes people wearing glasses also wear contact lenses in situations where glasses are a hindrance, such as while playing sports, or at parties where they want a natural look.
Some people wearing glasses may also get laser eye surgery done to correct their eye defect.
Whatever they may do, people wearing glasses are increasing everyday, and are here to stay!
