Reasons for wearing glasses

Author: 6neat

Glasses that aid in vision have been around since the 13th century. The modern version of reading glasses was developed in the 17th century but there weren't many takers.
Today a large number of people wear glasses. Children and adults both have several reasons for wearing glasses.
Some of the reasons for wearing glasses include the following.
One of the primary reasons for wearing glasses is for corrective measures. Wearing glasses helps to correct conditions of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. For correct vision, the image formed in the eye should be on the retina. In myopia the image is formed in front of the retina and in hyperopia it is formed behind the retina. In astigmatism the cornea or the lens is irregular because of which the image is not got into focus. Wearing glasses provides a lens in front of the eyes that helps correct these conditions and focus the image onto the retina.
Another common reason for wearing glasses is for protection and safety purposes. There are several work environments in which there is high risk to the eyes. In such places, it is suggested that the person wear glasses to protect the eyes. These safety glasses also differ in their design and lens. Generally high strength plastic is used and strength and thickness of the glasses in hospitals or labs, to protect from blood spattering will differ from those used by welders to protect from sparks. The American National Standards Institute has established certain standards that have to be followed. Safety glasses can also be made available to serve a corrective purpose.
A third reason for wearing glasses is to protect the eyes from harsh sunlight and possible UV rays. Sunglasses are dark glasses that may or may not be prescription glasses. Sunglasses are available in many types. There are sunglasses with photosensitive lenses available. These sunglasses function as normal glasses inside, and in sunlight darken to offer protection to the eyes. There are also polarized sunglasses available to cut out glare. Sunglasses are a very common fashion accessory and used by celebrities and others alike.
Another reason for wearing glasses is that it's a very simple and effective means of correcting vision and is portable and non invasive. This is in contrast to contact lenses that cannot be worn for many hours together and which also increase the chance of eye infections.
Finally be it for corrective reasons or not, glasses today are used because they are in fashion. Many people buy glasses that are not prescription lenses or dark glasses but because it helps them look intellectual and professional.
