OUR EYES...?

The human body is an intricate and brilliantly designed model. All the functions that we do as routine, including walking, sitting, thinking, talking, are the result of close coordination and execution of complicated messages to and from the brain. Every muscle and fibre in the body has a function to play, no matter how small or in inconspicuous it might be. Every organ and cell has a part to play, many of which we take for granted. A typical example of this is our eyes. We don't stop to think that our eyes are also an organ that needs to be taken care of and treated with some respect. Of the entire body, the one part that we abuse, probably without realising it also, are the eyes.

This is probably because our eyes are something that we use all the time and which are constantly in contact with the external environment. For several reasons, including injury, birth defects, strain etc, our eyes lose their optimum functioning. The result of this could be anything from difficulty in vision of various degrees, to total blindness. Vision impairment can be quite stressful for the person as it interferes with even mundane activities like reading the newspaper.

However there is a very simple aid to helping poor vision - glasses, also known as spectacles. Wearing glasses has made handling vision impairment simple and effective.

Today a wide variety of choices is available for people wearing glasses or who have the need to wear glasses. The choice begins from the frame of the glasses, whether plastic or metal. Both have their advantages, the plastic frames being lighter while metal frames being sturdier. In wearing glasses there is also the choice between glass and plastic lenses. For years glass lenses have been used, but with technology plastic lenses have become popular. These have an advantage of being lighter, definitely easier to handle without the fear of breaking them, and some plastics have better optical properties than glass.

People today are wearing glasses for several reasons. The most common reason for wearing glasses is for corrective reasons. Most people who have to wear glasses to improve their vision do so to aid in correcting the focal length of the lens of the eye.
Another reason for wearing glasses is for protection purposes. Glasses are worn by those working in environments where the eye are at risk, for example, those working with harmful radiations, welders, glass and dust etc. Sunglasses can be categorized here as they are the most popular type of glasses worn for protecting the eyes from harsh sunlight. They also fall under glasses worn for fashion.

Wearing glasses is not specific to one age group or gender. Children and adults alike have the need to wear glasses which are now an important tool for normal functioning.
