Women wearing glasses

Author: 6neat

Glasses were developed as an aid to better reading. Glasses in the 18th and 19th centuries were not as they are today, even though the modern design was developed then. Glasses were used as a fashion accessory in the form of eye glasses, pince-nez's and the like, and used merely to accessorize an outfit as opposed to being used to read or see. If one wanted to appear as fashionable they did not wear glasses or demonstrate a need for them in public. Glasses, if used, were done so in private only.
Glasses slowly gained social acceptance, and people started using them to read even in public. In fact due to the high cost of glasses, at one point it became a sign of affluence and status.
Today, although glasses have gained acceptance in society, there are still times when the wearer might prefer to do so in private and not in public and these are generally women.
Women wearing glasses have always had doubts about doing so. Women believe, right from when they are girls, that wearing glasses makes them look like geeks and unattractive. They are convinced that they will be unpopular amongst boys because they wear glasses. This thought continues even when they grow up. They feel that men do not find women wearing glasses attractive and thus there is always a stigma they attach to wearing glasses.
Women thus try and avoid wearing glasses. They look for excuses for their headaches and poor vision. If they do wear glasses, they may avoid doing so in public, especially in front of men.
Today, a lot of women wearing glasses are professionals, career oriented, and successful women. And yet they continue to believe that their glasses make them less of a woman.
However, this belief might not be totally right. Men actually find women wearing glasses quite attractive. Some even prefer those with glasses over women who don't wear glasses. There is nothing to say that wearing glasses decreases the sex appeal of the woman. It might even increase it.
Today glasses are available in so many different designs and styles that one doesn't have to stick to a thick rimmed dull coloured pair. Women wearing glasses are fast realising this and glasses are not only functional, but fancy and stylish and suit their faces perfectly. In fact, a lot of women wear only frames sometimes because it adds to their overall look.
So rather than hide in the background, women wearing glasses should step up and flaunt their look, making it the new in thing!
